Femto-Lasik

It is an alternative refractive surgical Laser procedure to correct refraction defects such as Myopia, Hyperopia and/or Astigmatism.

The LASIK procedure is based on creating a flap (corneal lid) on the cornea; which is the transparent front layer of the eye; lifting this flap and reshaping the cornea accordingly to the exact number of the refractive defect by using the Excimer Laser.

At Talya Eye Centre, the flap; created on the corneal surface for the Lasik procedure; is not created with a knife but with Femtosecond Laser.

Due to the extreme high pressure applied to the eye while creating flaps with a knife side effects and risks such as: irregular flap, epithelium movement under the flap, are very common and therefore creating flaps for Lasik procedure with the Femtosecond Laser is more safe and therefore we prefer to create the flap for the safety of our patients in our own center with the Femtosecond Laser.

The technique is called iLASIK (Femto-Lasik) as the flap is created with the Femtosecond Laser.

We receive questions like: “Do you have pain during iLASIK application?” and “What happens  if I close my eyes?” very often.

The iLASIK procedure is painless :

Local anaesthetic drops are applied to the eyes before the procedure. During the procedure, a “cap speculum” is installed to keep the eyes open. A laser vacuum ring is placed to the eye, due to the bubbles from the laser the vision gets reduced and the flap creating process lasts 15 -16 seconds. Afterwards the surgeon lifts the flap and the refractive number is corrected with the Excimer Laser. The lifted flap gets than replaced by the surgeon. Including the self tests of the laser devices this procedure does not exceed 5 to 10 minutes per eye.

About half an hour after an iLasik procedure the eyes will get watery,  foreign body sensation and sensitivity to light also may occur; these side effects are lasting for roughly 4-5 hours. The patient will be relieved of all these side effect symptoms within 24 hours. Drops are given to keep eyes moist and prevent infection. It is possible to return to social life the day after surgery, although we do not recommend swimming, heavy exercise and contact sports directly after the surgery.

OP. DR. MEHTAP ÜÇKARDEŞ ABAY who is the Head of Talya Eye Centre’s Refractive Surgery Unit will do post operative examinations the 1st day, 1st month, 3rd month and 6th month after the surgery. For patients from abroad who have just limited time after the treatment the TALYA EYE CENTER is providing a post operative follow up for 5 years without extra charge.
